Section 27 founder Nonima (aka Tam Ferrans) reveals Recur, a diverse and abstract electronic abyss that segues into and out of consciousness. Take the opening “Recursor” as a starting point—elongated sounds from another galaxy expand and contract with a warm modular undercurrent slithering through the fuzzy ambience. Elsewhere you’ll find recognizable Nonima cohorts dabbling with Recur‘s leftfield theme.
Cedric von Flugel takes on a definitive, hard-edged industrial slant within “Sea of Glass,” a wall of noise and pounding, rhythmic beatwork. exm delves into “terraHyb,” a DSP-smeared abstract shuffle that eventually shapes into crunchy-electro that fans of early Skam progenitors Quinoline Yellow, and Team Doyobi would enjoy. Dissolved’s support on “Alphateam” elicits a more tranquil broken-beat affair—pitter-patter percussion, drifting melodies, and casual clicks float above neo-classical cloud layers. Qebo offers a more subdued tone on “Deconstruct”—darker clouds roll in as Scanner-styled static sounds shape an ominous stream only to be entangled in synthesized metallic scrapping noises that erode over its nine-minute duration.
Recur certainly maintains its quasi-sinister veil throughout, punch-press industrial downtempo forms are present throughout. “Ngtv_Spc” and its shadow-cast “Novaya Zemlya” are pure soundtrack-driven snapshots that are light-years away in their production techniques. In this sporadic ensemble, Nonima culls the finest detail in his musical arsenal. Tracks like “Nekmit” and “Zapomnieć” stand-out as they open a plethora of data-mined basslines. But just as there are low-riding rugged beat patches, Nonima continues to evolve into wide-open ambient fields. Take the windswept, calming nostalgia of “Libra,” and the minimized piano keys that are sprinkled above skewed voices and distilled drones on “Schesis.”
Recur is choke-full of mechanically-infused electronic mayhem that is ever so lightly shielded by its tranquilized downtrodden shimmer.
